One of the best things about the Mother City is her bottomless well of local talents and treasures, especially when it comes to fashion. Being able to inject a spot of taste and personality into every outfit is a luxury we locals should take better advantage of. Especially when considering the rad creations local designers are abundantly producing.

My personal taste has been described as somewhat quirky. I love to keep it basic (tanks and jeans), letting my accessories do the talking. Jewellery, jackets, and shoes are where I like to get loud. My latest obsession? ZOOM trekkers.”

While other retailers have invested more in high fashion items, ZOOM has chosen to focus attention back to basics. If these babies are anything to go by, I’m stoked not to be a “high fashion” kind of girl.

Three main design elements – practicality, versatility, and comfort – are laced together in a super stylish, sustainable shoe that will see you galavanting through the city blister-free and looking fabulous.

Thank goodness for ZOOM because this OG Durbanite considers anything beyond slops (or flip-flops for Capetonians) a stretch.

ZOOM has sailed beyond aesthetic, using their business to give back in the most insane way.

Having the initial idea born in South Africa, it was only fitting that ZOOM would produce their shoes in South Africa, by South Africans, for South Africans.

Each pair is made by hand, by women, ensuring that your trekkers are as unique as you are. No two pairs will be alike. From traditional ShweShwe vibes to bandana brilliance to snooty suede and leather, there’s a pair suited to every personality.

“Businesses have more responsibility than just to maximise profits – they have a responsibility to the planet and to the community.”

Speaking of responsibility and community, this local business donates a pair of shoes to a woman or child in need with every pair sold through the AMY foundation.

I’m big on conscious consumerism, and ZOOM is working in a way that truly (and literally) brings the notion home. For me, it’s all about intention and mindful product purchase.

So, look good, do good and get ZOOM-ing.
