I think it’s safe to say that I live and experience our city like a tourist. For me, Cape Town just never gets old. Weekends are synonymous with that feeling you get the night before your birthday – you just can’t wait to unwrap the unknown.
Well, surprise! Here are a few of my favourite weekend festivities.
Hiking – duh
Anyone who knows me knows that I am part human, part goat. I love being up in the mountains with Mother Nature. It’s my idea of coming back down to earth, connecting with myself, and restoring my soul. Hikers-high is absolutely real. Some of my favourite treks include Kasteelspoort, Elephants Eye, Skeleton Gorge, and Constantia Nek.
Cake for breakfast
The only reason I eat savoury is to survive. Your girl here has the sweetest tooth on earth, and weekends are for indulging. Nothing beats coffee and cake. Wait – coffee, cake and cats. I think I just admitted that I’m the youngest granny around. Moving on swiftly. My best weekend treats include choccie cake from Chardonnay Deli, honeycomb ice cream from The Creamery, and the freshest churros from Olympia Bakery.
Soul restoration
A little me-time doesn’t always involve summits and sweat. Sometimes, it’s all about the salt. I have a real love affair with the ocean. I’m a coastal girl through and through. The hotter and more humid, the better. Throw me in amongst the waves and I’m a happy human. My mind is busy-busy, and so sitting still is something I’m trying to get better at. Reading, doing a little word-search, and beading bracelets on the beach are my go-to’s when trying to switch off. Clifton 4th, Bakoven, Dangers, and St James are always lekker. Sandy Bay is a treat if you’re brave enough to get bare.
Friends become family
Moving to the Cape meant leaving my family behind. I’m big on connecting with people, and over the years, have created my own little family of friends here. A good catch up is always essential on the weekends and we have a few fabulous spots we love to hang out. Sunset pizzas at Satori, picnics and wine at Eagles Nest, margaritas at Fat Cactus, and brunch at Wild Sprout or Kleinsky’s are always top-of-mind.
Don’t hate – create
My love for all things creative only begins with writing. Visual arts have always been a passion of mine. Nothing beats putting pen to paper and drawing. The beauty of creativity in itself is that you don’t have to be good at it to take part in it – a common and sad misconception. Whether you’re the next Picasso or an average Joe painting a mug at the Clay Café on a Sunday, getting involved in a little art is always good for the heart.
And there you have it – a few of my fave weekend adventures. Fingers-crossed we bump into each other along the way!
