There’s no law saying you have to be a couple to have a blast in Cape Town. In fact, there are loads of cool things to do and places to go where you can just show up all by yourself! If you’re feeling left out because you don’t have a partner this  Valentine’s Day, stick it to the man and rock it out solo at one of these cool places.

1.Yoga with cats

It’s been proven that spending time with animals can make you feel happier and more relaxed. Combine the furry feels with a good yoga session, and you’ll have a day to remember! The Lucky Lucy Foundation is quite a drive as it’s located in Malmesbury – but trust us, it’ll be worth it. A shelter for rescued cats, visitors also have the option to adopt one of these adorable felines. The next yoga session is on Saturday, February 15.

2. Attend an anti-Valentine’s Day party

While this might seem a bit tongue-in-cheek, it sure sounds fun. Scour social media for parties happening across the city, such as Death to Cupid that will be held at the V&A Waterfront. Who knows, you might make new friends or simply dance the night away without feeling like a third wheel in a place full of couples.

 3. Paraglide

If you’re feeling a tad more adventurous, summer in Cape Town won’t disappoint! You can go solo to almost any adventure activity, even those meant for pairs or groups because the company will easily pair you up with other customers. However, our personal favourite is tandem paragliding which will take you to see stunning views and soar like a bird. We love Cape Town Tandem Paraglide.

4. Kirstenbosch picnic

The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is a solo date spot for the win and many a Capetonian’s favourite hangout. Grab a blanket, pack your favourite snacks and a book and head off to spend a leisurely day in nature. If you’re feeling active, hike one of the many beautiful trails and take pictures of plants and animals you come across.

5. Counter dining

There’s no better city than ours to go counter dining by yourself. If you’re a foodie, head out to one of the many excellent restaurants or bars and make yourself comfortable at the bar or counter. This allows you to soak up the atmosphere and, should you feel like it, strike up a conversation with like-minded diners.

6. Watch an art film

Going to the movies by yourself is sometimes much more enjoyable than going with people. No one bothers you, speaks to you or distracts you while you lose yourself in the magic of the screen. Make it extra special and treat yourself to an art film if that’s your scene, or any other movie you really want to watch. Click here to see movies being shown in February across the city, including the Labia Theatre.

7. Go horse riding

Our equine friends are known to be super smart, sensitive and great therapists. Horse riding is a fun activity to do alone or in a group and most horse-riding centres will have guides who go with you if you’re not an experienced rider. Head to the beach on a summer morning or explore the forests and mountains for a serene digital detox. We like Horse Riding Cape Town.

8. Paint ‘n Sip

Getting arty is a fun way to uncork your creativity as an experienced or aspiring local artist guides you step by step to creating your very own masterpiece. All proceeds go towards Call 2 Care, a nonprofit organisation that heads service projects as well as developing, empowering and supporting our local artists. No artistic experience necessary!
For more info email [email protected] or keep an eye on their Facebook page.
The next one is on February 11 in Noordhoek.

9. Go for a djembe session

Release your inner rhythm and take a walk on the wild side. Djembe is a traditional Western Africa drum and is an absolute jol to listen to or play yourself. Go for individual lessons or join a communal drumming circle held every Saturday in central Cape Town by Djembe 4 all.

10. Visit the World of Birds

World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary & Monkey Park in Hout Bay is a privately funded organisation helping and rehabilitating sick, injured or orphaned animals. Go for a stroll to spend some time with the curious creatures! You’re sure to forget your worries and enjoy to your heart’s content whether there’s a man or woman on your arm or not.
