We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – local is lekker! And there’s no greater joy than uplifting our community by supporting local businesses. So if you’ve been wanting to lend a hand here and there and help support those who really need it, here are 10 ways you can bring some relief to places that have taken a hard-knock as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gift cards are gold

Buy a gift card now that you can use later from beauty salons, coffee shops, clothing stores and related businesses who have suspended their operations after putting the health and safety of their staff first. With birthdays and other special events coming up, it’s sure to be a real treat for the person receiving it, and even more so for the business that you’ll be supporting.

Share, share, share

It costs absolutely nothing to hit that share button when a local business is trying to pick itself up again. Share the business page, delivery menus, or ‘coming soon’ promotions and spread the word like wildfire to family, friends and colleagues who will be able help.

Regular check-ins

While it’s no secret that everyone is overwhelmed and dealing with their own challenges while trying to adjust to a “new” way of living, it’s also important to try to prioritise checking in on our favourite businesses. Perhaps the woman who loves chatting up a storm at the hair salon needs a pick-me-up, or the mechanic who you can always call on to fix your car is struggling to cope – reach out and hear how their business is doing.

Takeaways to cure hunger pangs

If you’ve been following our #HighburyHearsYou campaign, you’ll know that we’ve been spreading the word about a few awesome eateries who really need the boost. Many of these restaurants are offering deliveries and collections so make sure to look out for different options. We need to eat everyday, so why not do it while supporting locals.

Continue the support

If you’re by the means to, then continue paying people for their services. Whether they’re cleaners, stylists, tutors or nannies, try paying them in advance bearing in mind that the only income they may receive comes directly from you.

Tips are important

In most cases, waitrons depend on the tips they are given for some extra cash. If you can afford to, then add a little extra to the bill – whether it’s while the country operates on takeaways only, or even when we eventually get to sit-down at a restaurant again.

Take advantage of the digital world

Start a business network or a group chat where you can promote businesses, deals and services during this time. What better way to be thanked for your effort, than to see a local business flourishing again.

Volunteer your expert services

If you are an expert in graphic design, social media marketing or any related job, then offer your services to those who need it – free of charge. You might just end up being the reason someone’s business starts building momentum again.

Donate supplies if you can

If you are able to, then it’ll be a great idea to donate items like hand sanitiser, detergents, masks and related supplies to businesses in need. It can be costly to try to maintain a business and still have to account for added expenses so whenever you have an extra bottle of sanitiser (or three), keep in mind that there are people out there who might need it too.

Consider smaller businesses first

When you’re buying clothing, food, jewellery, or even making use of a service, try to opt for a local business instead. If more people walks through the door, the business begins to prosper as a result.
