Woodstock’s popular tourist destination, the Old Biscuit Mill, is more than just a trendy place to spend aSaturday. With a large variety of interesting and unique spots to explore within its walls, this creative and foodie hub is also the perfect place to shop during the week.
Here are a few reasons why you should add the Old Biscuit Mill to your list of weekday must-dos.
Art
Besides the regular art attractions at the Mill (like the photographic exhibitions at Exposure Gallery, the ceramic art by Clementina and Imiso, the sculptures and knickknacks to be discovered at Karoo Moon Country Store, the artist pop-ups at the Bello Studio, and the prints available at ArtLAb) the Mill has recently been adorned in several striking pieces of wall art and graffiti.
Both local and international artists have been featured. The four main walls pieces include CareOneLove’s (CPT) reimagined refuse area (rubbish bins blooming with fynbos), Conform’s (CPT) diverse group of characters as you enter the Mill on the left, Mars’ (JHB) impressive vintage submarine weaving its way through a Cape kelp forest (on the E Block wall) and Kelsey Montague’s (USA) famous wings that can be found next to the D Block toilets. #whatliftsyou
Many of these works aren’t visible during the weekend because the Neighbourgoods Market tents cover them up, so going to the Mill during the week is the best way to enjoy them. Why not snap a selfie while you’re at it using #OldBiscuitMillArt.
Moreover, if you have an artwork that needs framing, look no further than either Wessel Snyman or Castle Framing both based at the Mill.
Fashion
There are several great local fashion designers and fashion retailers who operate out of the Mill. These include Kat Van Duinen, Michelle Harper, the designers’ pop-ups at the Bello Studio, and RubyYaya at Yes, stockist of colourful island-style boho chic resort wear. You’ll have a great time browsing through these various inspiring fashion boutiques.
Design & Décor
The Mill boasts many creative local enterprises which offer high-quality, locally-produced décor and designer items. These range from Abode, home décor specialists, Continuum, creators of incredible wooden furniture, Upstart Office which sells bespoke office and home décor furniture solutions, Livision, Plush Props Retail for those looking for home and kitchenware, and lastly, Lime Grove Décor and Gifts.
Food and Drink
The Mill is synonymous with good food and drinks. Highlights include The Test Kitchen, Pot Luck Club, Burrata, Redemption Burgers and Saucisse Boutique Deli. There’s also Espressolab Microroasters, which is known for having the best coffee in Cape Town, the Cocoafair chocolate factory and shop, and Openwine, which showcases the best of local wines, craft beer and gin.
Gifts, Shopping and More
The festive season is upon us, and the Mill is the perfect destination to find holiday gifts for loved ones. Check out Heartworks, offering locally-made, handcrafted gifts, souvenirs, jewellery and more, Mu & Me, with a wide range of amazing kids clothes and stationery, Quirky Me, where you’ll find offbeat décor and gift items, Abode, Bazaar, Karoo Moon Country Store, Livision, Bead, and Glass Cabin, where glass straws, handblown glass products, beads, jewellery items and more can be found.
Additional retailer therapy/gift-shopping spots include Exposure Gallery, ArtLab, Saucisse (which offers some of the best foodie goods), there’s also Hint Hunt, the original live escape game. Playing a game at HintHunt is a teambuilding challenge guaranteed to be plenty of fun for all participants—go along with family and friends, ideal for a fun family holiday outing.
