The anti-poaching unit at the Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa had a great start to Valentine’s Day. They spotted a new rhino calf with it’s mother on the reserve this morning.
In 2005, Aquila brought the first rhino to the Western Cape. Not long after, the reserve announced the birth of the first rhino in the province for two and a half centuries too. These are accomplishments they are tremendously proud of.
Now, 15 years later, the reserve conservation teams are thrilled to confirm the birth of another baby rhino.
9 years ago, in 2011, three of the reserve’s rhinos were attacked during a poaching incident. Unfortunately only one of them survived. Thereafter, Aquila was no longer in possession of male rhino bulls, which affected its breeding programme.
The reserve obtained a new male rhino bull in 2014. It was acquired from the Limpopo area after its owners realised it was being tracked. At the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, Aquila was happy to report that four rhino calfs had been born at the reserve.
This Valentine’s Day birth is once again a proud moment for the conservation teams at this world-renowned Cape Town Big 5 private game reserve. The reserve continues to conserve, protect and preserve these species for future generations.
