The perfect answer to your summer breakfast and lunch needs is here – Tobago’s Restaurant and Terrace, located at the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, has launched its new Dubai-style brunch sessions. Labelled the Breakers Brunch, it is served on the outdoor patio of the restaurant and offers beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean as well as the hotel’s flow-rim pool.

The entrance to Tobago’s is wreathed in fairy lights and white flowers, and as I’m welcomed through by friendly staff, I feel as though I could spend a whole day here.

I’ve arrived a bit early, so I take the opportunity to sit at a table near the pool and watch the revellers basking in the already-sweltering heat. A couple splashes in the hotel pool, and the sounds of seagulls squawking adds to the idyllic atmosphere.

A waitress explains that I will have to wait as the brunch only begins at 12.30pm – it is now just 11.30am. I order a mojito, telling myself that its 12pm somewhere in the world, and she brings it to me within a few moments.

The view is beautiful and all-absorbing, and within no time, the waitress is by my side and guiding me to a table for brunch.

As I sit down, I am greeted by a complimentary glass of De Luca Prosecco. This is the perfect way to cool down in the stifling heat.

The starters are atypical of a brunch, and include sushi, oysters and tuna. The sushi chef is warm and inviting, and reassures me that he will make any type of sushi that my heart desires. I load up on tuna and salmon roses, and make my way back to my table.

This was my first mistake, and I advise you not to do the same – there are so many food options that you need to be careful not to stuff yourself too soon.

The tuna is exceptional, and you will not be able to get enough.

I’m a big oyster fan, and there are fresh ones on offer. The oysters with Tobasco sauce here are a firm favourite.

A DJ begins spinning a few laid-back tracks, and this sets the mood for a languid afternoon of sun, sea, food and good conversation.

Resident mixologist, AJ, makes one of the most crisp gin and tonics I have tasted to date, but this isn’t the only thing the Breakers Brunch has to offer – there is a wide choice of house wines, slushies, Mimosas, Prosecco, and various cocktails.

Very soon, the waitress returns to take our main course orders. Here you are allowed to choose from any three mains and two sides.

The waitress explains that the portions are tapas-sized. I make the decision to have the beef burgers, sirloin steak and lamb chops, with a side of Hasselback potatoes and Tandoori cauliflower.

This was the first time I had tried Tandoori cauliflower, and it will not be the last. My mouth fills with a rich, unexpected flavour as soon as I take my first bite, and the cauliflower has a slight crunch – just enough to make it satisfying to chew.

After I’ve eaten myself into a stupor, the waitress returns, informing us the dessert course is ready.

If you have a sweet tooth, prepare to be spoilt for choice. The desserts range from white chocolate Pavlova, to burned orange Creme Brûlée. My personal favourite was the doughnut wall; I am an absolute sucker for a fresh cinnamon doughnut.

This burned orange Creme Brûlée is a must-try!

Brunch at Tobago’s Restaurant and Terrace is served from 12.30pm and the cost is R550 per person for the brunch plus house wines, local beers, and soft drinks, or R695 per person for brunch, house wines, local beers, soft drinks, a selection of cocktails, mocktails and Prosecco.

Drinks specials are valid between 12.30pm and 2.30pm only, and bookings are essential.
