Capetonian Jean-Marc Johannes (28) has made the Mother City proud while competing at the prestigious Street League World Championship (SLS) in Brazil, achieving a position as one of the highest-ranked Olympic qualifying skateboarders.

Not only did he achieve a high ranking overall, Johannes is also currently the highest ranked Cape Town skateboarder in Africa.

This is not the first time locals have beamed with pride over Johannes’ efforts. He has been attracting attention with his skateboarding skills throughout 2019, receiving various invitations to compete internationally, including an invitation to compete in the Street League Skateboarding (SLS) series in Los Angeles, California earlier this year.

“I scored 21.13 points in my run, which is above some of the world’s best athletes and this will be added to my run score attained in Los Angeles,” Jean-Marc told SA Good News.

Thanks to his exceptional scores at both events, Johannes will go on to compete in an elite 5-star Olympic qualifier held in Rio de Janeiro this November. This event offers him the chance to double his points and further ensure his Olympic debut.

Johannes will possibly go on to represent his country and the Mother City at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games where skateboarding will feature as a recognized sport for the first time in history.
