The Cape Town 10s, one of the country’s largest annual social and sporting events, is taking place this weekend from February 1-2 at the Hamilton Rugby Club in Green Point.

The event has been running for an astounding 11 years and has grown from being a rugby-only tournament to a multi-sport event which sees netball, dodgeball, beach volleyball, hockey, and football games being played by various teams as well.

JP Smith, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, says the City of Cape Town Special Events Committee’s recently signed a new three-year agreement with its organisers, meaning that the family-friendly event will continue “until the 2020/21 financial year”.

This year along with the wide variety of other sports, Cape Town 10s will also feature a number of running events that will be taking place at the Cape Town Stadium track.

The Cape Town 10s aims to give back to the community and aid in social development. It has partnered with several non-profit organisations over the years, such as the JAG Foundation, The Atlas Foundation, the Coolplay project, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and others to promote development through sport. The event will be hosting a coaching clinic for 80 young rugby player from the Coolplay Project this year.

Prior to the main event of the weekend, former Springbok player Bryan Habana alongside other former Springbok legends will give motivational talks to pupils of Vista High School in Bo-Kaap, talking to them about the importance of discipline in team sports and life.

Current rugby stars Siya Kolisi, Eben Etsebeth and Scarra Ntubeni will be coaching their own teams for this year’s event, training the Abantwana Bomgquba, Etsebeth Express and the Ubumbo Legends.

“It is really inspiring that these players are able to give of their time to share and impart their knowledge to these young rugby players. This embodies the Cape Town spirit of giving back to the community,” Smith says.

The 2019 event is expected to host 90 rugby teams, 96 netball teams, 60 beach volley teams, 30 dodgeball teams, 14 football teams, 14 hockey teams, and 90 Crossfit teams from across South Africa and abroad.

There will be live music, food and drink stalls and a range of activities for the whole family.
