Cape Town has been ranked Africa’s number one destination for events and festivals at the World Travel Awards.
At the recent red-carpet event hosted in KZN, Durban International Convention Centre, the globe’s leading industry professionals gathered to celebrate the respective victories, it was announced that the Mother City is “Africa’s Leading Festival and Event Destination” for 2018.
It seems our beloved coastal town can’t help but rake in the recognition as it was also named Africa’s top city of opportunity earlier this year by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
The recent award is largely due to some of the Cape’s biggest events addressing their impact on water resources and reducing consumption accordingly. During the Cape Town Cycle Tour, water was brought in from sources outside the city with this in mind, resulting in a low-impact event enjoyed by participants.
On top of this achievement, smaller community-based events and festivals continually do their part to contribute towards sustainability, along with local businesses aiding in promoting local tourism and encouraging travel in and around Cape Town.
Some of the most sustainable events of the year also included:
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, voted as the Greenest Marathon in the world for 2017, also said to be the world’s most picturesque marathon.
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, which creates more than 2 000 temporary jobs annually.
The Cape Town Cycle Tour which brings over R500-million into the Western Cape economy and attracts about 4,000 international riders to the city each year, while allowing participants to take in the phenomenal landscapes of the Mother City.
