Pride is the time of year where many different kinds of love and sexualities are proudly celebrated, and loudly so. All too often, Cape Town’s queer community is too fearful to come to the forefront, and the Cape Town Pride Festival is the perfect week be to out and proud.
Cape Town Pride is an annual gay pride event ending with a pride parade held in Cape Town. It usually runs from around the end of February and is a week of festivals, parties and other events.
The first South African pride parade was held in Johannesburg on October 13, 1990, the first such event in Africa. The first pride parade in Cape Town was also held in 1993, and it has been held as an annual event ever since.
Cape Town Pride was not held in 2003 when the event timing was moved to February.
The day of the pride march is filled with colour and smiling faces. Expect lots of fun with floats and music as the procession moves from Chiapinni Street in De Waterkant to Reddam Field at the Green Point Urban Park for the famed mardi gras. Here you can expect to see a variety of drag performers wow audiences, and dance to the music by DJs and live performers alike.
