Cereal is a culture all unto its own, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.

The way we pour our milk, whether we even want milk with the bowls of, mostly, sugary goodness or if we want to stir things up with orange juice (people do this) says a lot about our characters. They say the eyes are the window to the soul, but I would argue that how we like our cereal is just as much of a soulful window.

Yesterday, I popped into the office with some cheeky Coco Pops in hand, ready to battle the day. My colleagues wanted to indulge too and well, what is the joy of cereal without sharing it?

But when my one colleague nonchalantly put her milk in a mug to warm it up for the pops to glaze in, I must admit I was shocked.

I had to know about other cereal secrets I had missed out on, and so I took to Cape {town} Etc’s social media to uncover the truth.

These are the cereal secrets of Cape Town.

This is a very important question because I, like many of you had never even heard of such a concoction.

However, 11% of people have actually tried it! While 89% said they absolutely had not.

One @roxxi.m.clark brought to our attention that Fruitloops and custard is a fantastic combination.

Your favourite cereals, (local, or international ones we need here).

Who are the royals of the cereal world?

For our locally accessible champions, responses saw Coco Pops at the top of cereal excellency. Good ol’ Rice Krispies and classic Cheerios essentially tied at the podium, and they were followed by the sweet melodies of Strawberry Pops. The simple, yet powerful All-Bran also made a prevalent appearance, though it did not beat some of the other contestants.

For international and hard-to-come-by cereals people said:

  • Lucky Charms
  • Reese’s Puffs
  • Oreo cereal which is found in Korea
  • Cinnamon Toast Crunch
  • Chinese sticky sesame cereal (thank you @man_called_stan. for this rare yet intriguing cereal curiosity).
  • Sugar puffs
  • Marshmallow Crunch
  • Chocapic
  • Honeysmacks
