It’s no surprise that Cape Town’s iconic backdrops have grabbed the attention of the world, featuring our iconic and towering Table Mountain, beautiful beaches and rolling greenery in top Hollywood films and the most recent Apple’s Watch Series 4 advert that showcases the city as the star of the show.
The City’s landscapes offer the ideal environment for various genres of world-wide films and adverts – our contrasting mountainous area alongside the Atlantic Ocean and the bustling city provides multiple settings for productions.
Here are 4 global platform films and adverts that shared the natural beauty of Cape Town –
1.Apple’s Watch Series 4 advert
Although Apple is launching their new Watch Series 4, the main feature of the advert is the Cape Town setting with multiple parts of the city featured in their global advert.
The advert showcases people from across the world taking part in activities they are passionate about, with the song ‘Hokey Pokey’ playing in the background while wearing the Apple watch 4.
The video features several local locations such as Table mountain, Camps Bay, the Cape Town CBD, the Atlantic seaboard and Hout Bay.
It appears that the main location for the punchy short advert was shot in Cape Town and we cannot help but beam with pride that the rest of the world gets to see a short glimpse of the dazzling backdrops of the Cape.
2. Tomb Raider
The action-packed film made globally famous from Angelina’s feature as the main character in 2001 was reshot in a new film that focuses on the start of ‘Lara Croft’s journey into the underworld of fossils and more.
The film began shooting in 2017 and started at a quarry location on a Paarl wine estate, later shooting on constructed film sets at Cape Town film studios.
The main actress, Alicia Vikander commented on the beauty of Cape Town’s backdrop in the clip below.
“You have the sea and sun and then Table Mountain and the mountains behind you, it looks like a Trueman show, it looks like a backdrop, it looks fake, it’s that pretty,” she said.
We must admit, we fully agree with Vikander.
3. Black Sails
A pirate-themed drama, Black sails chose Cape Town as the location to shoot their series, as the Cape Town Film studios provided the ideal location for the production.
The series premiered in 2014 and shot a few special scenes for the show in the Keurboom Rivers Nature Reserve that is situated in the heart of the Garden Route.
The river was used as a shooting location as it winds its way around a thick forest with a lush and aesthetically pleasing woodland environment.
4. Mad Max: Fury Road
The renowned story of Mad Max came to life once again in 2015 and features local top actress Charlize Theron with Tom Hardy as the main character. The story is set during the time of an apocalypse against the backdrop of a desert environment and is a fan favourite.
It is renowned across the world as it follows the cult film genre and is a blockbuster film franchise.
The famous movie was shot at Cape Town Film Studios with a state of the art set built, with other locations across the world featured in the film including the Namibian desert.
