Cape Town has no shortage of homegrown celebrities and Springbok Steven Kitshoff is a fan favourite. Loved by all who come across him, this large man with an even larger heart took some time from his busy schedule to chat with Cape Town Etc’s Anita Froneman.

Here’s what Kitte had to say about becoming captain of the Stormers, life during lockdown and how he used to compete in beauty pageants as a child.

Congratulations on becoming the captain of the Stormers! How does it feel to be leading a team you have ploughed your heart and soul into for many years?
I’m very honoured that they trust me with this responsibility and very excited to continue and work hard with this awesome team and incredible coaches and management.

Lockdown has been tough for everyone. What are some of the things you missed about normal life and work, training with the team and playing matches?
Definitely missed my teammates and training with them the most. I definitely missed playing, but I won’t take the few months my body got to recover for granted!

What is something that you have come to enjoy about lockdown?
Quality time with my wife as well as the DIY projects we got to do together.

Tell us about some of your interests and hobbies outside of rugby.
On my off days, you can probably catch me on the golf course. I’m also a big fan of water sports, especially wakeboarding.

If you didn’t become a rugby player, what other job would you have most likely been doing?
The dream would be a professional golfer, but more realistically,  probably something in property.

Do you enjoy any other sports?
I enjoy boxing, but I also like to watch a variety of sports like cricket and MMA.

How do you and Aimee keep your relationship strong while both maintaining busy schedules?
We luckily have a lot of similar interests, so we make time to go training or box together. We love to try new restaurants when we have some spare time.

Tell us a fun fact about you that most people don’t know.
Gosh, that’s a hard one… probably that my mom entered me in a few beauty pageants as a kid!

What do you love most about Cape Town and Capetonian people?
I love the variety Cape Town has to offer. The amazing variety of world-class restaurants and experiences.  I am a pretty relaxed guy, so I also really like that most people in Cape Town are very laid-back.

Where is your favourite hangout spot in the city?
My favourite restaurant is Bouchon Bistro and my favourite place to hang out and catch up with friends is definitely the Village Idiot.
