Safety and security measures are being increased at tourist hotspots this festive season.
The City of Cape Town is working with police and municipal law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of tourists and locals.
Cape Town has seen an unfortunate trend in attacks within popular hiking areas in and around Table Mountain National Park. This has resulted in areas such as Orange Kloof Tented Camp in Table Mountain National Park temporarily closing.
In response, the City is putting mechanisms in place to prevent as many incidents of crime as possible from happening in the holidays.
City assets and facilities Mayco member James Vos told EWN the safety of tourists is a core focus and will help in the promoting of Cape Town as a travel and trade destination.
“It’s difficult for me to promote Cape Town … if I cannot provide a safe destination. So, we’ll be working to make sure that we have sufficient policing sources located to our tourism hotspots,” Vos said.
Vos added that authorities will be on duty at all popular tourist areas at all times.
“We’ll also work closely with other agencies and private security industries. We also have television installations in the city,” he said.
These security measures are welcome news given the frequency of reported crimes in popular mountain areas this year.
