Coco Safar has been recognised for producing one of the best croissants in the world by Food & Wine, featuring in their “The perfect Croissant” article. For over 40 years, Food & Wine USA has defined the American epicurean experience. It is the undisputed independent global authority on all things culinary.
The article places Coco Safar as having one of the best croissants in four of the most iconic foodie destinations in the world – Tokyo, Paris, Melbourne and Cape Town.
Food and Wine has a viewership of over 7.5 million people, with over 3.5 million Instagram followers and more than 27 million monthly page views on its website. This is a momentous occasion for the team at Coco Safar.
The team have been relentlessly pursuing excellence in their Cape Town flagship store and bakery atelier over the last 5 years. This acknowledgement effectively places Coco Safar right next to the best in the world, including the award-winning Parisian boulangerie, Du Pain Et Des Idées, which boasts a cult following.
“We are grateful to all of our customers in Cape Town and around the world who have shown us love over the years and made our passion possible by supporting us day after day, even during lockdown when this daily indulgence, the humble croissant, brought a little bit of comfort into people’s homes,” said Wilhelm Liebenberg, Co-founder of Coco Safar.
“And we take great pride in making an exceptional croissant at the tip of Africa using only local ingredients, when we were in fact told that it could not be done,” adds Liebenberg.
Croissants are notoriously difficult to execute. Especially if you don’t have access to the incredible history of viennoiserie-making as well as the experience and expertise of Paris’ multitude award-winning and highly experienced bakers.
This makes the recognition so important – not only for the Coco Safar culinary team, but for Cape Town.
In the past few years, Cape Town has fortunate been recognised for its culinary scene, specifically in the fine dining arena. Institutions such as Wolfgat, Test Kitchen and La Colombe have been recognised amongst the world’s 50 best restaurants.
What a great moment for Cape Town to be put on the map of the best bakeries in the world-among the best from Tokyo, Paris and Melbourne. It’s an incredible endorsement and feel good moment for the Mother City, especially for these trying times facing the restaurant industry.
The Food and Wine recognition came soon after Bloomberg was quoted, headlining an article about Coco Safar as “Now you can put the world’s best coffee in your Nespresso machine”. Forbes USA was also quoted not long after, saying “Coco Safar paves the way in luxury coffee” and L’Officiel Paris said “Best breakfast in town and without any doubt the best coffee and café in the world.”.
It’s important to note that one doesn’t develop brands of global relevance in just a year or two. The Coco Safar founders and executive team have made incredible personal sacrifices over more than 15 years to reach this moment. Just the past 3 years in their Sea Point flagship store has seen relentless 24/7 commitment and a pursuit of excellence of a magnitude very few people even know about.
Looked at by industry insiders as the “Hermes of coffee, patisserie and café culture”, Coco Safar will be selectively rolling out in major style capitals of the world, including New York, Paris, London and Tokyo to name a few. Currently in negotiations with major international luxury groups to take the brand global in 2021, Coco Safar is poised for international expansion and success, which makes the announcement even more timely.
