Dave Busschau (49) dubbed ‘ Crazy Dave’ has embarked on a running journey from Nelspruit to Cape Town to achieve a life long dream while also helping others.
Busschau is known by close friends and family as ‘Crazy Dave’ for his tenacity, fun personality and love for marathons and endurance sports. He is a business owner that has a passion for helping others and intends to walk nearly 2 000km to raise money for four-legged animals and amateur runners.
This is not the first marathon that Busschau has taken part in, he already has a long list of recorded achievements under his belt – competing in international marathons in New York and Jerusalem, finishing 10 Comrades Marathon events and over 100 Ultra marathons.
Busschau is no stranger to long distance running and is well prepared to complete the 1900km journey from Nelspruit to Cape Town. He will attempt to complete this long-distance running marathon in a mere 45 days, from 1 September to 16 October when he will reach the Cape, which just so happens to be the date of his 50th birthday.
Along with completing this monster marathon, funds are being gathered as Busshau tackles the challenge and attempts to cover 40 km -60km a day. All funds being raised will go to Nelspruit SPCA and the Nelspruit Marathon Club, an organisation that aims to provide a safe and friendly environment for runners of all ages and encourages everyone to stay active.
The campaign ‘Run like Crazy Dave’ has raised R5112 so far and hopes to raise R30 000 by the end of the marathon. Donators can specify where they would like their funds to go to either an SPCA location in the country or to help a new runner at the Nelspruit Marathon Club.
Along his travels to the Western Cape, Busschau has been welcomed by locals in each area with warmth and support. If you would like to be apart of Busschau’s journey, the public has the option to join Busschau for a few kilometers as he passes through your town or offer him a warm bed and meal along his journey.
With an undeniable passion for running Busshau sees running as more than just a sport or physical activity.
“One of the best things about running is that everyone is equal while they are putting the kilometres behind them. It’s all about you, your mind, your body and your fellow travellers as you push yourself and each other to achieve even greater distances than you imagined possible,” Busschau said.
