Locals are not a fan of the long wait at OR Tambo when travelling from Cape Town to Australia, but Project Manager for Cape Town Air Access Paul van den Brink says this soon may be a thing of the past.

Speaking to Reuters, Van der Brink confirmed that the group, together with Cape Town International Airport, are looking to capitalise on the boost to the tourism market caused by CPT’s new direct flights to New York. This could lead to a number of other new direct flights.

Possible new direct routes on the cards include Brazil and Australia. Van der Brink says there are plans to connect Cape Town to Sao Paulo in Brazil, marking the city’s first direct flight to South America.

Van der Brink did not reveal the exact city but says Cape Town may soon be connected with one of Australia’s busy and bustling metros and has named the country as the next flight route target.

A direct flight between Cape Town and Australia could alleviate a huge amount of air-travel inconvenience and it is a route that has been missing from South Africa’s offering for far too long.

Currently the quickest way to get to Australia from Cape Town is to travel to Johannesburg and land in Perth after taking off from OR Tambo, this route totals around 16 hours at the very least when considering the wait in between flights and airport transfers. A direct flight route could reduce travel time to closer to the 10 hours mark.
