As the Cape and the rest of the world struggle against the plague of plastic that is suffocating our oceans and natural environments at large, the Eastern Cape has instated a new rule to better battle against plastic at beaches.
Across the Cape, from Gansbaai to the Karoo, locals are making an effort to combat plastic pollution, from storm water drain nets that catch plastic before they reach the ocean to branding drains to remind residents and visitors that they are connected to the ocean. Now the Eastern Cape is joining the fight.
In a recent post shared to their Facebook page, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape has announced a new rule that asks every beach-goer to pick up at least three pieces of plastic during their visit.
The municipality is asking everyone to share their post and spread awareness about the new rule. With hundreds to thousands of visitors making their way to beaches every day, the possibility of ridding beaches of plastic by just picking up three pieces each is well within reach.
As the Cape continues its fight against plastic pollution, especially at our precious beaches, locals are reminded to keep our beaches clean, especially over the festive season when the beaches are filled to the brim with bathers.
