In the heart of Woodstock, the Old Biscuit Mill – or simply the Mill as most Capetonians lovingly refer to the centre – is a creative hub where fashion, art, design and foodie delights take centre stage.

Once upon a time, the precinct used to function as an actual biscuit factory for the Pyott’s company. In fact, remnants of this historic legacy can still be seen in spots in and around the Mill, like the PYOTTS name on the courtyard chimney stack. Since then the Mill has been transformed into the dynamic destination of today where you’ll find one-of-a-kind fashions, quirky travel mementos, local artworks and artisanal products and decadent eateries. There’s also a popular Saturday market that bursts with sensory delights and just an all-round awesome weekend vibe.

These are a few of the things we love about the Mill and encourage those looking for an authentically Cape Town experience to enjoy for themselves:

EAT

One of the Mill’s biggest drawcards is the tantalising selection of dining establishments. These range from the multiple award-winning restaurants helmed by Luke Dale-Roberts, including Africa’s best rated restaurant the Test Kitchen and the very instagrammable Pot Luck Club, to Saucisse Boutique Deli where an appealing array of fresh local produce, baked goods and other foodie treasures await. There’s also Burrata and Redemption Burgers, which respectively serve up some of the Mother City’s best Italian fare and burgers.

SHOP

Next on our list of Mill faves would be the singular shopping opportunities that abound within the centre. Unlike a regular mall, you won’t find any large chain stores here. Just the finest local designers, creatives and artists showcasing their awesome talents.

For unique gifts (secret Santa or festive season wishlist anyone?) check out Quirky Me, Mu & Me, Lime Grove and Bazaar. And for impressive leather goods, check out one of the Mill’s newest additions, Black Sea Collective.

DESIGN

Art and design lovers will certainly not be disappointed with a Mill meander. Besides the cool street art dotted around the Mill, a host of fashion designers, artists and furniture makers call the mill home. Uber talented local ceramic artists at Imiso and Clementina handcraft some of the most inspiring ceramics you’ll ever see.

For furniture Continuum manufacture exquisite pieces from reclaimed timber and for all your home décor needs, check out Abode.

And finally our top fashion picks include menswear designer extraordinaire FIELDS, as well as boho-chic outlet RubyYaya @ YES and all the amazing local designs you’ll find at the Bello Studio, Collide and Michelle Harper.

The Old Biscuit Mill is open Mondays to Saturdays and located at 375 Albert Road in Woodstock.
