We’re back with our market series and this time we’re looking at night markets in the Cape. From sunset food markets on the beach to treasure troves of vintage finds, here are some of our top picks.

1.Mojo Market

Another addition to the bustling Sea Point promenade, Mojo Market, based in Regent Road, is open seven days a week, morning till night, boasting an eclectic mix of food and lifestyle vendors. Browse a range of African artifacts, handmade prints as well as jewellery, clothing and homeware from local and international traders. The food on offer is a delightful mix of over 25 stalls – from winter comfort food (try the Baskin-Robbins waffle bowl) to daily fresh produce. Mojo’s namesake Coffee Collective is a collection of Cape Town’s artisanal roasters, including the popular Origin blends, which will keep market-goers energised.

2. Intaka Island Winter Night Market

During the winter months, the night market at Intaka Island provides a cosy enclave suitable for the whole family. Indulge in warm hearty foods and mingle with a vibey crowd. Guests can enjoy live music while sitting around an outdoor fire pit or heaters in their tented areas. As a beautifully protected wetland area and bird sanctuary, Intaka Island at Century City is the ideal place to pop by after work on a frosty Friday evening.

3. Hope Street Market

Every Thursday evening, an historical old building in the CBD forms the backdrop of the Hope Street Market, where over 30 traders are handpicked from around the Cape to showcase the highest quality, freshest food items. The initiative aims to create a viable, sustainable and independent quality food market that’s rooted in local community and offers a platform for trade. A live band ensures the atmosphere is upbeat while on one Thursday each month you can scour a selection of clothing and jewellery stalls.

4. I love Big Bay Market

Indulge in the surfer lifestyle once a month at the Big Bay Market throughout spring and summer. Soak in a stunning sunset at the beach with a drink in one hand and hotdog in the other. A selection of food trucks selling boerewors, burgers and beer feed your appetite, while hand-crafted clothes and accessories on offer means you can dress the part too.

5. Noordehoek Community Market

Every Thursday evening the Cape Point Vineyards, with its picturesque lakeside meadows, is the proud host of the Noordehoek Community Market. Enjoy the best in local fare, fine wines, craft beer and of course the view! Try the Foodbarn’s pop-up kitchen or Angel Chef’s vegan-friendly offerings.

6. Truth Timeless Market

The famous steam-punk cafe Truth Coffee is host to an intimate pop-up market on selected Wednesday evenings. Expect antique bric-and-brac, hand-made goods, clothing, jewellery, accessories, vinyls and more. Roasting Records will keep you entertained all night with some lively beats while a range of food and drink specials will ensure you’re kept cosy and warm on chillier evenings.

7. Chilled Market at The Range

Chilled Market at The Range is just that – good wholesome food in a country setting that’s child friendly too. A wide range of food – made fresh on the spot – includes wood-fired pizzas, gourmet hamburgers, Italian pasta, sushi, salad and more. The delectable sweet selection boasts an on-site chocolatier and amid other treats. The massive marquee makes the market suitable for all weather conditions and the log cabin and fire add to the welcoming ambiance.

8. Bang Bang Vintage Market

Cape Town locals love a good vintage clothing find as much as they love designer wear. The Bang Bang market combines both of these on the first and last Thursday of every month. These treasure troves are filled with quirky finds and fabulous jewellery and offer a fun respite from the daily schedule. Get a drink and some food in between your hunt and if you’re there on First Thursdays, pay a visit to the surrounding art galleries and museums.

9. V&A Food Market

Just outside Cape Town’s tourist hub, the food market at the V&A Waterfront sports an array of hand-crafted artisinal food products. The market is home to over 50 traders and located next to the Watershed shopping precinct, it the perfect spot to pick up a light snack or fresh fruit juice. We love the popular Woodies burgers (great for when you’ve worked up a real appetite), and the decadent frozen yoghurt snacks from Yokos.

10. The Vineyard Oval Wednesday Market

This outdoor market located at Kenilworth Racecourse offers a relaxing yet vibey mid-week outing. Good food, craft beer, wine and vintage clothing vendors will keep you occupied for a good few hours. With designated kiddies play area, it’s perfect for the whole family – plus you get a break from cooking too.
