It’s a new month and you know what that means. It’s time to (safely) take to the streets and explore Cape Town’s cultural and artistic landscape.

Now that we’re on Level 1 lockdown and the curfew has been extended to 12pm, locals can get their culture on and enjoy what our local artists have to offer. Select galleries and other attractions will participate in First Thursdays on March 4, and now more than ever is it important to support our local artists and restaurants in a responsible, COVID-19-compliant way.

Here are a few galleries you should pop into on the day:

Eclectica Contemporary

This popular gallery focuses on African Art from around the world, offering a unique collection of art that interrogates the issues facing us in a globalized world.

On show this first Thursday is the 11: 11 exhibition, a “new exhibition format that marries contemporary art alongside notable contemporary African designers, ceramicists and creatives in conversation with the gallery’s collection of iconic mid-century modern and vintage furniture pieces,” explains the gallery.

This contemporary art gallery showcases work by local artists as well as a collection of art books by Taschen.

Currently on show is Johannesburg-based artist Andrew Kayser’s ‘Not Enough Time to Do Nothing’ exhibition. His work reflects the thematic and formal concerns he has experienced over the last 18 months.

This gallery is all about exhibiting contemporary and modern art from around the continent. The art displayed represents both emerging and established artists, giving everyone a chance to shine.

Currently on show is the ‘In [the] Loop exhibition which includes artwork by 11 amazing artists like Kelechi Nwaneri, John Newdigate and Zemba Luzamba.

Those who are more into abstract art will enjoy the moody creations at Deepest Darkest, a boutique contemporary gallery in De Waterkant.

The gallery’s first show of 2021 is Nocturnes, a solo exhibition of paintings by John-Michael Metelerkamp. Nocturnes is a collection of paintings inspired by the artist’s life in Knysna, where he was born and raised.
