The Mother City is renowned for the abundance of family-orientated outdoor events, for delectable food and fresh seafood and for its ability to host world-class race days. Put all the elements together and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable experience that the whole family will enjoy!

The Cape Town Prawn Festival takes place on February 22 at Kenilworth Racecourse and promises to be an appetite-whetting, lip-smacking, adrenalin rush providing affair. For the horse racing enthusiasts, the race day concludes the 2019/2020 #SummerOfChampions in the Western Cape and provides race-goers with no less than five graded races on the card, including the Grade 1 Cape Derby which was won last year by Mike de Kock’s Atyaab.

The supporting programme for the Cape Derby includes the Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes (Gr 2), the Vasco Prix du Cap (Gr 3), the Cape of Good Hope Nursery (Gr 3), the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery (Gr 3) and the Selangor Jet Master Stakes.

It sounds like a mouthful (pun intended), but the only thing more appetising than a race card jam-packed with feature races, will be the thousands of delicious, freshly cooked, succulent prawns that will be served on-course. The Cape Town Prawn Festival brings a new meaning to “Surf and Turf” with the racecourse playing host to a sumptuous seafood spread. For just R99 for 25 prawns, served with chips, rice and a sauce of choice, race goers can expect a feast of flavour.

There will be a number of alternate food vendors on course for those who may not wish to indulge in the shellfish feast as well as a number of vendors selling their crafts – creating a family-friendly market on course.

The Cape Town Prawn Festival and the R1 million Cape Derby coincides with the week of the Asian Racing Conference (ARC) which is one of the world’s largest thoroughbred racing conferences and is proudly hosted by South Africa in 2020. It provides a forum for international leaders to address issues and concerns which the industry, as a whole, is facing and we look forward to welcoming delegates to our country and to our race day.

Entrance on to the racecourse is free and includes live entertainment and entertainment for the kids. With prizes worth R50 000 to be given away on the day, including R20 000 worth of household appliances to one lucky race-goer, there are so many reasons to attend.
