Getting around in a metropolitan area leaves the traveller with numerous options, such as driving themselves, hailing an Uber, taking a hop-on, hop-off bus or making use of hotel shuttles. But seasoned travellers know all too well that the best way to experience the true local character and culture of a region is to visit the smaller, often off-the-beaten-path areas.
Transport to the smaller towns in the Cape Winelands does not pose a challenge in itself, but once you are there and you want to start exploring, how do you get around? In true rural spirit, the local tourism associations, together with small businesses in the respective towns, have ensured that tourists are not left to their own devices.
From vintage cars, rental bikes, shuttles to tractors, you will find various modes of transport in the town of your choice. Imagine biking from one wine tasting to the next, how much fun will that be?
McGregor, a small town on the edge of the Langeberg, offers traditional bicycles with baskets for rent. In Montagu, on the other side of the Langeberg, you will find Flying Feet where each unique bicycle has been hand painted by a different local artist. If cycling is not suitable, enquire about the hop-on, hop-off wine safari shuttle.
Uber is well established in Stellenbosch and in Franschhoek. Just over the Helshoogte Pass you’ll find Tuk Tuk Franschhoek, whose three-wheeled vehicles will get you around all day and even after a leisurely dinner. In Paarl and Wellington, there are comfortable shuttle options that cater for single travellers and groups over a choice of distances.
Several private taxis operate in the Breede Valley, including Woeber – the Uber of Worcester – that is available via mobile. Tulbagh and Ceres have limited options, but the guesthouses in the area will help you find a way to get around.
To make everything go smoothly, download the Cape Winelands Tourism Routes and Events App from the app store on your mobile phone, or contact the local LTA at the e-mail addresses listed below.
Either way, don’t let a lack of wheels stop you from visiting the magical Cape Winelands where, as the saying goes, there are 1 000 things to do…and then some wine.
