Hadedas are one of South Africa’s most hated birds – many find these loud big birds to be annoying and they are infamous for dropping their… er, droppings, on people below them in mid-flight. It is surprising then, that the Newlands area has adopted a hadeda of its own.

Named Harry The Newlands Hadeda, the bird rose to fame when he was constantly on the pitch during the second Test between the Proteas and England at Newlands Cricket Stadium, where he spent most of the match hunting for worms on the outfield.

Harry stopped the play several times until the fielders came running up and chased him away. The hadeda informed his Twitter followers that he had to convince his wife that the Proteas could not play without him, and returned after being chased off.
