Hermes, Cape Town’s favourite caracal, has made yet another appearance. This time, he was spotted enjoying his Friday morning in Skeleton Gorge.

In a post shared by The Urban Carcal project, the big cat was captured using a tree as his personal scratching post.

“Caracals, like other wild cats will use scratching posts for two reasons: to sharpen their claws and to mark their territory. Here he may be doing the latter given that he gives the tree a relatively quick scratch and it’s on a major trail,” the organisation said via Facebook.

“So if you are curious to see the territorial mark of a caracal, you can keep your eyes peeled for the characteristic claw marks of a large cat while you are out hiking on the trails.”
