The debate team from Jan Kriel School, a school for learners with special learning needs, made their community proud when they won a national debate competition in late September.
According to News24, more than 600 learners took part in the competition in Krugersdorp from September 23-28, including mainstream schools from all over the country, which featured different categories.
One of the topics up for debate was road safety, an initiative of the Road Traffic Management Corporation together with the Department of Education to educate children on road safety and encourage research on safety issues in general. On top of the debate, learners also had to build a model to support their speech and do a presentation.
The winning team from Jan Kriel consisted of Dylan van Wyk, Aldin Masimila, Megan Tim, Ane Eigelaar and Anuschka Carrick. They each received an iPad, as well as a trophy and medal.
