Kalk Bay has garnered the title of ‘coolest neighbourhood in the world’ on a recent Forbes list along with 11 other areas. This is no surprise as Kalk Bay offers a quaint escape from the city hustle and bustle with art nouveau chic and tons of personality. The town even beat one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Barcelona, who placed 12.
The Forbes list qualified areas through advice from top travel experts for 2018. An important characteristic of each listed neighbourhood is that they offer local creatives to grow and Kalk Bay ticks that box perfectly. It is a wonderful hidden gem nestled on the False Bay coastline.
Aside from the spectacular sea views and interesting fishing community – it offers a laid back, retro atmosphere. It is home to surfers and outdoor enthusiasts and artists of every kind. You can venture there to explore the over head caves, catch waves or inspiration.
Founder of award winning travel agency Black Tomato, Tom Marchant, shared his appreciation of the area with Forbes. “Blanketed with quaint cafés, rustic fishing boats and colorful storefronts, this vibrant harbour neighborhood is recently the talk of the city.”
He loves that local artists are given a platform to let their talent shine. “An intricate origami installation created by Kalk Bay local Sanae Sawada decorates the walls of the iconic café, which is just steps from the charming seal invaded wharf,” said Marchant.
Home to some favourite local spots such as Brass Bell, Cape to Cuba and the idyllic Kalk Bay theatre – this fishing town has more to offer than meets the eye.
