Kudu, a City-supported production, has won three awards at the prestigious Fleur de Cap ceremony held at the Artscape Opera house.

Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien, comments on the importance of arts and culture in Cape Town: “There is no doubt that the arts strengthen the economy and spark creativity and innovation. The arts have a social impact, exposing communities to a variety of genres and skills. This helps to preserve our culture and heritage and is an investment that the City is honoured to make.”

Created on the Platform for Special Talent, Kudu was staged in the Baxter Theatre’s Flipside Theatre in 2018, and qualified as an entrant in the 2018 Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards.

Funded by the City, Kudu is a performance that addresses issues of land, culture and identity in South Africa.

“The arts force us to challenge what we think about issues and compel us to review what we believe about the world around us.”

Founded in 1965, The Fleur de Cap awards honour theatre excellence in the expression of arts, culture and history.

Writer and director of the masterpiece, Lwanda Sindaphi, took home the award for Best South Africa Script and Best New Director.

The awards did not stop there; Kudu also won the Fleur du Cap award for Best Performance by an Endemble.

Badroodien says, “The awards are not just a feather in the cap for this young company, but also gives credence to the City’s support of arts and culture programmes to make it more accessible and reach a much wider audience.”
