Born and bred in Paarl, Nabihl Liebenberg is a local talent taking the basketball world by storm. At 1.70 meters tall, this local legend might not be the tallest player on the court. But that’s not stopping him. His drive and determination are supersonic, traits which have seen him head and shoulders above the rest.
“Strive for greatness. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
Liebenberg fell in love with basketball after watching it for the first time on TV. Headstrong youngster as he is, he approached his school, Dalweide Primary, at nine-years-old to find out about playing. Today, he’s putting himself and his community on the map. He’s on his way to the big leagues.
Discipline and hard work has seen this passionate gent work his way up from the Northern Cape Zebras to being scouted by one of the biggest clubs in the United States: the Purple Jags, Texas.
This is just the beginning for the young sports star. He has his sights set on the NBA (National Basketball Association, North America). How he plans to get there? Discipline, hard work and respect.
“The goal is to get over to the States and be the best player in the league. You have to be disciplined and obey the rules of the court and respect your fellow teammates.”
Community is everything to Liebenberg.
“I’ve grown up in a poor community where opportunities aren’t given to us by hand. So, it’s very special for me to be in this position. It’s special for me to be able to share my story with the youth.
“I feel like I have a lot to give back to Paarl. I just want to go to the States and bring back what I’ve learned and develop my community, especially sports.”
For Nabihl, the greatest human act is to inspire. He is passionate about being an example of how passion, faith, focus, discipline and hard work can change your life.
