THE DETAILS:

You know what’s great? Great coffee. Better than great coffee? Being served great coffee by a great human being. Monde Ngwenya is a Capetonian on the move, and we love everything about him and his business, Molweni Coffee.

As a business owner, he represents all that the spirit of Cape Town has to offer: vibrancy, brilliance, and divine coffee, all packed abundantly into a bright container behind the Kloof Street Hotel.

Monde is a man who knows his coffee. The 31-year-old has been part of the hospitality industry for over eight years, making him a barista well worth visiting.

While there are many spots to grab a coffee in the Mother City, there isn’t anything similar to all that is Molweni. The business was birthed from the struggle and the need to survive as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept became a symbol of hope for Monde.

No matter the situation, all you need is to be alive with a cup of coffee.”

Molweni signifies just that – life. It’s all about Ubuntu and coming together. “Molweni” itself is a Xhosa greeting, and you won’t feel anything less than being welcomed home when you visit this special spot.

Monde grew up in Khayelitsha, an upbringing and culture that lies at the core of this establishment.

“Coming from a poor community, all we knew was that when a guest comes in, you have to serve them a good cup of tea or coffee.”

The idea of the container also holds roots in Khayelitsha, where a lot of people in the township live off of businesses set up just like this. Monde wanted to bring this concept to the city, offering something unique that is also linked to his heritage.

Molweni Coffee is not just a great success and an awesome concept. It’s a tangible pillar of hope for the youth, says Monde. It’s a symbol of hard work and dreams coming true.

For Monde, it’s all about doing something that you love and doing it with passion – not worrying about anybody else or the challenges that might arise.

Monde sees the Molweni container as an opportunity to grow and expand, hopefully creating job opportunities for youngsters to inspire and teach them to have courage as he goes along.
