On a chilly winter’s afternoon in the heart of the Slanghoek Valley, Opstal Stay launched a brand new accommodation experience, offering the perfect country chic escape, with a hefty dose of luxury.
A quick 1-hour drive from Cape Town brings you to the picturesque Slanghoek Valley, just around the corner from the little town of Rawsonville.
Here you’ll find beautiful landscapes, hiking trails, fly-fishing hideaways and of course, Opstal Estate – a working wine farm with a suite of unique offerings. Guests were greeted at the estate, where you’ll also find their restaurant, ‘Opstal Eat’, and wine-tasting facilities, ‘Opstal Taste’. From there, guests were taken up the hill, just across the road, to where five standalone units are now situated, and bubbles were waiting.
Not only do the units look sleek and inviting from the outside, but they also present unique decoral elements and exquisite attention to detail. Each unit is individually named in honour of the Opstal family’s heritage – Lady Ansie, Lang Jan, Nellie’s Needle, The Barber and Carl Everson – placing a special emphasis on sentiment. With family at the heart and centre of everything they do here, it’s hard not to immediately feel at home.
Established in 1847, the farm prides itself on hospitality, and it’s evident in every element that they have to offer. Attie Louw, the seventh generation winemaker and current operator, explained how they wanted to create a luxurious and contemporary atmosphere, yet still stay true to the farm environment. Not only was the stay incredibly comfortable, but it was special and memorable, which made it all the more difficult to leave – even after just one night.
Apart from the panoramic views and breathtaking series of mountains, the units are impressively spacious, with beautiful wooden finishes, walk-in showers, luxury beds and a slow combustion fireplace to snuggle up next to with a glass of wine. The deck is just as impressive – complete with a braai in the one corner, and a wood-fired hot tub in the other, overlooking the entire valley. With the everyday hustle and bustle of the city life, Opstal Stay is the perfect getaway. Be it for a romantic stay, a weekend wine expedition, or to simply experience the serene silence void of traffic.
Opstal Stay offers five standalone units consisting of two four-sleeper units and three two-sleeper units.
All units are self-catering, or hearty meals can be enjoyed at Opstal’s restaurant, from Wednesday to Sunday, thanks to chef PJ Lombard.
The current price for a four-sleeper unit: R1 950 per night on weekdays, and R2 250 per night over weekends.
The current price for a two-sleeper unit: R1 450 per night on weekdays, and R1 750 per night on weekends.
