Have you ever come face-to-face with a raging blaze that threatened to consume everything around, including yourself? But instead of running the other way, you choose to run towards the flames to save homes, animals and human lives.
This is the reality that firefighters face on an almost daily basis. A brave reality became evident when Cape Town firefighters took to the slopes of Table Mountain on April 18 to fight back the blaze that threatened to devastate our city.
While every day should be a celebration of these unsung heroes, May 4 is reserved to celebrate these remarkable individuals. On “International Firefighters Day,” you are invited to remember the brave men and women who spent countless hours volunteering, protecting and serving our community. It’s a time to show our support and appreciation for both South African and international firefighters.
Here are a few ways you can show your appreciation:
- Wear a blue and red ribbon pin: The official symbol of International Firefighters Day, proudly show your support by wearing a blue and red ribboned pin.
- Let them know: Social media is a great way to show your love and appreciation for these incredible individuals. Tag a few of your favourite volunteer organisations, such as the Volunteer Wildlife Services or the incredible female firefighting team, the Juliet Crew.
- Donations: Incredible initiatives such as the Juliet Crew are always in need of funds to help ensure they keep fighting the good fight. Organisations such as this have such a huge impact on impoverished communities, as this particular organisation focuses on empowering women and breaking into a male-dominated field. Several other organisations need your help, so make sure that you support them when you can.
