Is there anything that women can’t do? The Juliet Crew is a trailblazing, all-female firefighting team that’s kicking butt and taking names. These incredible women have been instrumental in helping to fight the devastating blaze that’s been wreaking havoc along the slopes of Table Mountain this week.
The kickass crew was established in 2019 under the All-Woman Wildland Firefighting Project and is the brainchild and partnership between the NCC Environmental Services, Chrysalis Academy, and the Department of Health and Safety (EPWP programme).
While you may be enamoured by their confident exterior and steely determination to run towards danger, these women are inspiring in more ways than one.
Many of the women who make up the Juliet crew come from disadvantaged areas and backgrounds in Cape Town, which include Mfuleni, Macassar, and Khayelitsha, all of which have a reputation for poverty and violence.
Sharne Martiz, who forms part of this amazing all-female team, says that she has a new drive for the future.
“In my community, we deal with a lot of gang violence, teenage pregnancy, youth unemployment and a high rate of poverty. Being part of this team has not only taken me away from my daily life, it has given me more drive for my future, she says.”
Along with providing life-changing opportunities, in collaboration with Dr Lucille Meyer, the CEO of Chrysalis Academy, the NCC Environmental Services aims to address the insufficient representation of women within the industry.
“Over time they will stand shoulder to shoulder – not male or female, just one.” Managing Director of NCC Environmental Services, Dean Ferriera declared.
