To ensure the safety of all pets this up-coming festive season the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA) has partnered with Identipet to offer a mass pet microchipping drive from October 15 – November 4 2018.
The drive will ensure that all pets have reliable identification, as the current lack of suitable chipping hinders the process of finding a lost pet, increasing the trauma for the lost and bewildered pet.
Another reason behind the initiative is to ease the number of stray animals that are admitted to the animal welfare sector over Guy Fawkes.
AWSSA spokesperson Allan Perrins gave insight into the reasons behind the new campaign.
“We felt that we had to do something to mitigate this untenable situation which seems to get worse not better with every Guy Fawkes,” Perrins said.
The campaign will provide microchips to animals at a drastically reduced price in order to make the identification mechanism more affordable.
Identification microchips will be administered for R100 per pet and will help increase the lifespan of the animal by making it easily trackable if lost.
The initiative will be hosted at AWSSA Head office on Papkuilsvlei Road in Philippi, Cape Town.
Experienced and qualified para-veterinary personnel will administer all microchips.
Owners are assured that it is a pain free process for their pets.
“The process is quick and painless and we have decided to run the campaign on a first come first served basis,” said Perrins.
The are a surplus of benefits to implanting the microchip and Perrins explains that the implanted mechanism is reliable.
“Our choice of supplier which has been in business for going on 30 years is based on their products robustness and reliability and the fact that their products can be read by any scanner so the chances of identifying the owner quickly is almost guaranteed,” he said.
The actual microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice and is suitable for all pets, not only cats and dogs. Other pets such as tiny hamsters have been given the identification chip before.
Ensure the safety of your furry loved animals this up-coming Guy Fawkes day.
