On the night of Sunday, February 9, Moonlight Mass will have cyclists from around Cape Town, professional and otherwise, bike their way through the streets. From the McDonald’s Greenpoint meeting point, the group will make their way along the promenade to the Sea Point pool pavilion, and back, through The V&A Waterfront, and up Long street, returning via the fan walk.

The event is hosted by Critical Mass Cape Town. Critical Mass is a global community of bikers who have formed a movement which aims to bring bicycle usage to light. Another goal of their mission is to “democratize streets, and have fun on the most efficient, cheapest, and most accessible transport medium ever conceived.”

Taking place on the last Friday of every month, the moonlight mass brings many a biker onto the streets in celebration of cycling. The moonlight mass, in addition to the aims stated above, is meant to symbolise the culture of cycling and the unwillingness of cyclists to allow motorists to run the roads.

While Critical Mass is a great cause, and cyclists come together to support it in the streets, the event is not officially sanctioned. The organisers “encourage responsible road use and encourage the use of suitable safety gear and lighting.”

The Moonlight Critical Mass takes place in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban along with other cities all over the world. The next event will take place on February 9, from 8pm to 11pm.
