St George’s Grammar School in Mowbray will be hosting an annual Pride Day for its students. The school set the plan into motion in the hopes of promoting inclusivity, and the event will take place over the course of two days.

A rainbow flag will be proudly hoisted above the school, and pupils will participate in a two-day-long casual wear day where hearts and stickers will be for sale. The funds raised from this will go to charities supporting marginalized youth.

“Schools should initiate and facilitate conversations about the LGBTQ+ community and all aspects of social injustice. Schools have the responsibility to educate and harness the values of our Constitution, which include human rights to dignity, equity and freedom,” the Grammar School’s principal Julian Cameron said to IOL.

“Through education we encourage activism and create an inclusive and tolerant school environment. LGBTQ+ history and movements being taught in schools is still an uncomfortable conversation for many pupils, educators and parents.”

Lerato Mamabola, leader of the school’s PLN (Personal/Professional Learning Network) reassured parents that the school is not forcing students to form part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“We are educating pupils about the community and its significance in our society. We are aiming to fight prejudice in our society by spreading awareness,” she said.
