The fires that recently ravaged the Garden Route and continue to plague various outlying areas of the Western Cape have brought about new life. Fresh flora has been found sprouting in the Bergplaas area near George, demonstrating the resilience of nature.

Recent images captured by Facebook user Kathryn Cooley shows fresh flowers and greenery emerging a mere nine days after the blaze.

The vibrant flowers in the charred environment create an image that shows a powerful contrast between the damaged and the new. Cooley shared the post on the social media page of the Indigenous flowering plants of Southern Africa.

Fire Update

The Garden Route District Municipality has issued a statement regarding the most recent status of fires in the region. Currently, there is an active fire in the Jonkersberg area and firefighters are working hard to stop it from spreading towards the farmlands.

In a social media statement, the Garden Route District Municipality asks members of the public to remain calm if they see smoke billowing from the Jonkersberg area.

“The Garden Route Fire Services Team is in the process to create a controlled burnout, to eliminate the threat of fire coming from the mountain towards farmland. This will cause a lot of smoke, therefore the public should not be concerned about the visibility of smoke. The burnout will be monitored by the teams on the site,” the municipality says.

Fire Status:

Soetkraal: Internal fire spot is active, perimeter risk burned out.

Dubbelberg: Fire-line burning around the Dubbelberg plantation. Currently being monitored.

Riversdale: Fire is contained at Garcia.
