What better way to celebrate Africa Day than with a traditionally African meal. The word “traditionally” is used flexibly here, considering the beautifully broad spectrum of African cultures we have access to right here in the Mother City.

Here are 10 places to celebrate Africa Day in the most delicious way possible.

Timbuktu Cafe, 16 Lower Main Road, Observatory

This quirky little gem is a must visit if you’re down for something warm and hearty. Expect all things Ethiopian, served in an intimate space packed to the brim with vibrant decor. From warm beef stew to aromatic vegan delights, there’s something on the menu for everyone.

GOLD Restaurant, 15 Bennett Street, Green Point

So much more than just an African restaurant, a night at GOLD is an immersive experience that will take you on a 14-dish taste-safari paired with traditional Mali puppets and entertainment. Throughout the meal, diners will enjoy learning about the country of origin, cooking techniques and spicing of each dish. The menu includes everything from Xhosa pot breads to lamb and springbok samosas.

Pahari Africa Restaurant, Salt River

This local gem presents a unique African dining experience right in the heart of Cape Town. Their exceptional and exclusive menu includes dishes ranging from mopane worms, which one can have as a full meal or as a snack on the side – to fully fledged meals that leave one gratified.

Bebe Rose Restaurant, 78 Church Street, Cape Town Central

Bebe Rose restaurant brings together all the tastes of Africa into one location. Menu specialties consist of various indigenous red meats, white meats, vegetarian dishes and a range of unique African sauces. All their ingredients are locally sourced. 

Addis in Cape Ethiopian, Corner Long & Church Streets, Cape Town

With its authentic décor and cuisine, sharing a meal at Addis in Cape is bound to be an experience you, your family and friends will remember. The dishes are served together on a large plate which is layered with a pancake-like sourdough base called Injera. Without utensils, your hands and Injera are used to scoop the various flavourful stews and sauces. The menu offers an equal amount of both non-vegetarian and vegan meals.

Karibu Restaurant, Shop 156, V&A Waterfront

Set between the picturesque view of Table Mountain and the tranquil blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Karibu Restaurant affords you the opportunity to experience the vibrant flavours of South Africa. On the menu? Everything from succulent steaks and delicious seafood to Cape Malay and traditional local favourites like boboite, potjiekos, game, snoekbraai, putu and chakalaka, and koeksisters.

Bo Kaap Kombuis, 7 August Street, Upper Whale Street, Bo-Kaap

This simple, family-run restaurant offering Cape Malay cuisine, is a must try if you’re lus for a curry. Their menu is as colourful as its surrounding location, including everything from tomato bredie beef to homemade malva pudding served with hot custard or ice cream.

MARCO’S AFRICAN PLACE, 15 Rose Lane, Bo-Kaap

Marco, chef and owner of Marco’s African Place, is the first black restaurateur in Cape Town. Join him for a taste of African culture, indigenous African and Cape cuisine, as well as live local music. Marco’s speciality dishes include a Pan African platter (Springbok, Kudu and Ostrich), as well as home-brewed African beer.

Mama Africa, 178 Long St, Cape Town City Centre

Mama Africa’s kitchen offers hearty meals, a friendly meeting spot at the famous snake bar, and local sounds from musicians which are sure to generate a true feeling of African vibes. Think Mama’s bobotie, Moroccan lamb served with stewed fruit and almonds, wild game, and Malagasy fish.

The Africa Café, 108 Shortmarket St, Cape Town City Centre

Escape on a journey of culinary delights across the vast African continent. Sample the flavours of Africa with their delicious tapas menu, or enjoy a feast with the Africa Café set menu, including dishes such as Botswana Seswaa Masala, Kenyan Channa Fish, or Tanzanian Sesame Chicken Kebabs – to name a few.
