#HighburyHearsYou – we at Cape Town Etc are passionate about getting local restaurants back and booming in business. As part of our #HighburyHearsYou initiative, we’re dishing out the deets on some incredible restaurants in and around town.
Ryan Vrede, Creative Director of Teamgeek and one of South Africa’s most influential sportswriters, is taking us through his menu of favourite eateries around town, and why.
Favourite breakfast – Max Bagels, Bree Street
I love the energy of the city early in the morning and being able to absorb that from the sidewalk seating area with an incredible scrambled egg and bacon bagel and a black Americano, is one of my life’s great joys.

Favourite lunch – Clarke’s Bar and Diner, Bree Street
A hangout for some of the city’s most gifted creatives and some other really dope people, and, most importantly, home to the best chicken sandwich in Cape Town. On a Saturday you can wash it down with R25 mimosas, then order another one when you realise it’s 7pm. There are other excellent choices on the menu, but just trust me on this one.

Favourite dinner – Scarpetta, Woodstock
There is no rival for an authentic Italian culinary experience anywhere in the city. The experience is excellent from the moment the owner Ricky greets you at the door with a beaming smile, his passionate and detailed description of your meal options, to the time he sends you home feeling thoroughly satisfied.
Don’t ask him what’s good on the menu because he’ll tell you it all is. I’ve tried it all. He’s right.

Favourite sweet spot – Kirstin’s kick-ass ice cream, Constatia Uitsig
I love nature. I love great ice cream. Kirstin’s, set on a farm in the middle of the Constantia valley, combines the two.

Favourite drinks place – The Athletic Club and Social, Buitengracht Street
The city’s bars can be populated by really pretentious people, so it’s great to know they haven’t yet discovered this spot. I hope they never do because there are few better places to enjoy an Old Fashioned. If those drinks go deep enough into the night you can make your way from the balcony to the basement and keep the party going to the sounds of everything from the Bee Gees to Kanye West.
