The World Rugby Council has announced this morning that South Africa will host the Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2022. This will be the first time in history that the much-loved tournament will be hosted by an African country.
“We’re delighted that South Africa and Cape Town has been confirmed as hosts for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby to Springboks Rugby. “We have been eager to host global rugby tournaments for a number of years and to have the flagship event in the growing sport of Sevens come to South Africa is exciting.”
The world’s best men’s and women’s sevens rugby teams will clash for the cup at the Cape Town Stadium, in Greenpoint.
Khaled Babbou, the president of Rugby Africa, also expressed his excitement: “Rugby Africa is very proud and happy that this tournament is coming to Africa,” he said. “It will add to the growth of the game on the continent. Congratulations to the South African Rugby Union.”
He also went on to say that rugby sevens is an innovative and thriving format of the game that has enormous appeal, hoping that it will only continue to have a positive impact on the sport.
The Sevens World Cup tournament will be held in September of 2022. The match dates are yet to be announced.
