The Street Store is an initiative that encourages locals to take to the streets and give the things they don’t need or want to people in need.
Clothing hangers made out of posters hang along a fence on a dedicated street and encourage locals to hang or donate something they don’t want.
This week on Saturday September 21, 2019, the 940th pop-up street store will take place to clothe Cape Town’s homeless. The event will be held at the Safe Space Precinct under the Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
Street Store is a non-profit organisation that aims to connect people from different walks of life while uplifting those who go without basic needs.
“We want people to meet and to interact – so the world’s haves can meet the have-nots and they can remember that both sides are human,” says the organisation.
Homeless people will be able to line up at the store and choose the clothes they need at no charge.
These frequent events aim to show residents how homeless people are no different from themselves, highlighting the unfortunate circumstances that left people without a home, food or even clothes.
Locals with a few unneeded or old clothes are encouraged to pack them into a bag and head over to the street store this weekend and do your part.
Several locations where event take place are mention on The Street Store’s Facebook, you can check these out here.
Highly requested items include clothing, shoes, underwear, socks and sanitary or hygiene products
