The high-lying areas in the Western Cape were blanketed in snow this week. The picturesque scenes have drawn many visitors to the area, but authorities have urged them to stay home.

The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre were alerted to an influx of visitors to the Cape Winelands, and in particular the Witzenberg area. Visitors were eager to see the snowfall on the mountain ranges in the area.

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, is requesting members of the public not to travel outside their municipal areas.

“Travel restrictions remain in place with regards to ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the public is cautioned to adhere to the existing regulations,” says Bredell.

Fynbos under snow ❄️, amazing how the icy white stuff transforms the mountain fynbos into a magical wonderland. Perhaps more amazing is how these plants are able to endure 40C heat in summer as well as being blanketed by snow in winter… Truly inspiring ? #fynbos #snow #hiking #protea #proteaneriifolia #boyswithplants #mountains #southafrica #winter #winterwonderland #landscapes

It’s been freezing cold and this is why! Look at these incredibly beautiful snow capped mountains in Franschhoek today. It is such a magical time of the year – though it can be cold and wet, there is no better time to cuddle up in front of fire place, open a bottle of Franschhoek wine and enjoy the gorgeous mountain views. Our village has the most awesome delis around now too, so if you can head on out to enjoy the snow and stock up on delicious fresh produce that are locally sourced from the valley. Many of our boutique shops are also open and all within close walking distance of each other in the village. Or order in from your favourite restaurant in Franschhoek.
