The humble yet mighty potato has long been a staple food source across the globe. The potato is beyond a side dish or an extra in the restaurant of life. It is the main character. For years, many have clashed over how should best be enjoyed. Sliced skinny into salty fries that have you saying “just one more”, are the champion of potato art for some. For others, potatoes baked in the oven to hot perfection to be served with butter and a dash of rosemary are the only way to go. We’re not entirely sure about how everyone in the world feels about their favourite potato dish, but the polls are in for Capetonians, and we have the truth right here thanks to the Cape {town} Etc community.
How do Capetonians best enjoy their potatoes?
The age-old question has been answered.
Baked or mashed?
Mash fans are going to be disappointed with this answer. Mash did not come out on top, with baked potatoes winning as 51% of people chose delicious baked potatoes over delectable mash.
Slap tjips or skinny fries?
Going to the tuckshop and ordering slap tjips was one of the highlights of any school day. But skinny fries do have an elegance about them that sometimes supersedes the school-favourite kick. In the case of Cape Town, skinny fries took home the gold at 57% choosing a skinny over slap tjips. However, there are still 43% of us who would still choose slap tjips anyday.
And lastly, skin-on fries or curly fries?
Curly fries though not as commonly found in SA as skin-on fries, did put up a fight, however 66% decided on skin-on fries. As for the curly-fry lovers of the world, you’re not alone, there are 34% of us who chose potatoes in curly deliciousness.
We may disagree on how we like to enjoy them, but one thing is true. There’s a different potato for everyone, and even if you feel like you are a couch potato today, there are always going to be people in life who love you as just that.
