Similar to people, pets can get stressed too. Changes in their environment, a scary situation or a new family member could all send your pet into distress. Right now, especially with the fires present in our beloved city, the stress is eminent for our pets too. To help ease your furry-friends stress and anxiety, here a few tips you can try for your stressed pet:

Provide a safe space for your pet

Creating a safe space for your animals to retreat when there’s a stressful citation or crises will help to ease their stress. If your furry friend is a dog, get a comfortable kennel or covered crate that’s filled with a snug bed and all his favourite treats and toys. Cats are more free-roaming creatures, so designate a separate room that your cat can retreat to when it’s feeling anxious or stressed. Make sure they have access to a litter box, yummy food and water.

Get some exercise

There’s nothing that releases anxious and stressed energy better than exercise. The same goes for your pets. If possible, allow your pet to enjoy daily exercise, allowing them to release excess energy or stress. Daily walks, a game of fetch, or any fun indoor games that will help distract and boost your pet’s endorphins.

Get your pet thinking

If daily exercise isn’t something that you are able to do, try stimulating your pet’s mind. This is a great way to hone their mental skills and keep them entertained. You can do this through food puzzles and interactive pet toys.

Natural supplements

There are incredible natural supplements available that will help to reduce your pet’s anxiety and stress. While these products are natural, make sure that you run them past your vet first before giving anything to your pet.

Use pheromones

There are various pheromones available for cats and dogs that help ease anxiety and stress. Adaptil is a popular synthetic pheromone for dogs that replicates a comforting signal found in mother dog’s milk, which has a calming effect on them. For cats, Feliway is good to look into and helps to alleviate tension within cats, especially between cats. However, make sure that you consult your veterinarian before giving your pet anything.

Play some music

Never underestimate the power of good music. Music is a healer for humans and pets alike. Soothing your pet with melodic notes may help to relieve some of their stress. However, while rock music may help put you in a chilled mood, it may not do the same for your pet. YouTube has some excellent dog and cat calming music playlists you can try.

 Your pet’s watching you

Similar to children, pets are good at picking up the energy of their owner. If you’re feeling stressed and anxious, your pet is likely to feel the same. While it may not be easy, especially in a scary or stressful situation, try and stay calm.
