The opera-singing Uber driver who shot to internet stardom after a video of him belting out a song to entertain a passenger went viral finally got the chance to share his talent with Cape Town Opera yesterday.
Shortly after the video of him singing went viral, Menzi Mngoma was invited to audition for a role with Cape Town Opera.
It has always been a dream of Mngoma’s to be a performing opera singer, and he couldn’t wait to take to the stage and share not only his voice but his passion.
Mngoma is a musicology graduate and talented opera singer who currently works as an Uber driver in Durban.
The 27-year-old said the audition opportunity has been a dream of his for more than a decade.
“I’m very excited, I can’t even explain myself. I have that thing in me that says the time is now and I’ve just got to do this. I’ve been looking to go to Cape Town Opera for about 10 years now and it just didn’t happen,” he told EWN.
Mngoma is yet to receive feedback from Cape Town Opera but his life is already on a new path that is sure to lead him to great things.
The original video of Mngoma showcasing his amazing talents, captured and shared by Uber passenger Kim Davey, has been viewed over 600 000 times and counting.
Davey, whose heart was touched by his singing as he drove her to her destination, is possibly Mngoma’s biggest fan. She has been sharing his exciting news whenever she gets the chance, most recently announcing that Mngoma has been invited to sing at a prestigious awards ceremony.
“Menzi Mngoma has been invited to sing at the 2nd AfriCAN Authors Awards 2019 in Johannesburg. So a flight ticket sponsorship is needed. Would any of our proudly South African carriers be able to assist?”
