Bambi, the young Cape grysbok that was saved by local firefighters from the flames which engulfed the Overstrand Region is currently suffering from an eye ulcer caused by exposure to the blaze.
Rescued by the Winelands Fire Services, Bambi suffered severe burns on its hooves and face. Rescue teams ensured that the animal was given medical attention by ER24 Paramedic teams and was transported to remain in the care of The Country Animal Clinic located in Somerset West.
The Clinic has been working tirelessly to ensure the buck heals, from bottle feeding to wrapping his wounds.
Veterinarian at the Country Animal Clinic, Dr Adri Rossouw shared in a social media post that Bambi is still suffering from injuries sustained during the fire.
“Bambi recently developed an eye ulcer as a result of his exposure to the fire and his one leg is a little sore but he is still eating and drinking well and that is always a good sign,” said Rossouw
Bambi has made friends with several other animals at the clinic, from a rabbit to a cat and is more than comfortable in the care of the veterinarians and nurses.
“We’re pleased with the progress Bambi is making. He’s also made another new friend; Dr Adri’s cat!”
The road to recovery for the young grysbok is a long journey.
The clinic is calling on locals to donate funds to support the firemen and paramedics who rescued Bambi by providing aid to EberVet and Kaws, animal welfare NGOs. Any amount big or small is welcome and will go towards the rescue teams and animals in need.
“The funds close on Friday so this is a big appeal to you all! Thank you.”
The clinic held an event to thank the firefighter and paramedics involved in saving Bambi. Fireman Tasswin Lewis, paramedics Wardi de Wet and Riaz Arenas and Cape Nature officer Sydville May.
“We held a party for them at Country Animal Clinic today and presented them with Certificates of Appreciation for their services to animals, and hampers of goodies including pet food for their own pets.”
