Dam levels have shown another positive rise this week, pushing up from last week’s 65.3% to 65.9%. Levels may rise further as heavy rains are forecast to start from Tuesday onwards.
Water storage has continued to show healthy increases thus far into September since dam levels hit the 60% milestone in August. This is the first time in 18 months that dams have reached this high in water storage capacity.
With healthier dam levels, the City made the request that the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) relax the water restrictions.
The DWS has rejected this request, saying that water restrictions will only be reviewed at the end of September once the rainy season is officially over.
The good news is that rain is on the way, with forecasts predicting up to four days of solid rain. A cold front will make its way to the Cape on Tuesday evening bringing with it upwards of 25mm of rain in some areas.
Rain will persist until midday on Wednesday, and thereafter more rain may be on the cards for Thursday and Friday. Stellenbosch and Paarl are expected to receive the largest levels of rainfall.
Steenbras Upper and Lower, Theewaterskloof and Berg River dams will all receive rainfall.
