Thanks to the successive cold fronts that brought stormy weather and icy temperatures to the Cape this week, areas in Matroosberg also received ample dustings of snow.
On July 23 and 24, visitors flocked to the high-lying nature reserve in the hopes of seeing snow, and they were not disappointed.
“Today was a new experience, with a type of snow I have never encountered before. It’s almost like it’s alive. Best way to describe it is a cross between quick sand and kinetic sand. Was weird and difficult to drive in as it left us with very little steering control, but as always every new experience is a new adventure,” said Matroosberg Nature Reserve in a post it shared on Facebook.
Snow is expected to stick around in the area today and those still looking to have themselves a snowy adventure will be in luck.
According to Matroosberg Nature Reserve anyone looking to see the snow will need to travel quite far up the mountain and travel in a 4×4 as the snow is falling in very high-lying areas within the reserve.
“Snow for tomorrow – still only 4×4’s. It just started to rain, hopefully the snow on the mountain will survive the rain and give us a couple of more snow filled days into the weekend.”
Those who did make their way up the mountain struggled to drive their vehicles through the thick snow, so adventurers are warned to be prepared for a uphill battle.

Matroosberg is not the only place in the Cape receiving snowfall, the Swartberg Mountains also got their fair share in the past two days.

Cold weather and rain are expected to stick around today and leave the province later in the week, returning on Monday as another cold front touches down on the Western Cape and possibly brings even more snow.
