Capetonians are in for a windy and rainy rest of the week. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has advised the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre of a number of weather warnings. Snow is also predicted in certain parts of the province.
From Tuesday, June 9 to Thursday June 11 an intense cold front with an associated cut off low is expected to make its way through the province.
Gale force coastal winds and interior winds are expected as well as heavy rain, very cold conditions and rough seas.
According to the SAWS, Gale Force North-Westerly winds (60 to 65 km/h) are forecast between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday June 10, strong to gale force interior winds (55 to 75 km/h) and gusting winds (65 to 85 km/h) will take place over the Cape metropole.
Very rough seas are expected from Wednesday morning with waves expected to reach heights of 4-5m and 6-7m between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas.
Heavy downpours will also make their way to the metropole on Wednesday accompanied by fairly cold temperatures.
According to Storm Report SA, the Western Cape is in for disruptive snowfalls that will lead to temporary closure of mountain passes expected on high ground areas in the province from Wednesday, June 10 to Friday, June 12.
“All City services and external agencies will be on standby to deal with the predicted adverse weather conditions. Residents are reminded to please ensure that they remove any potential blockages around their homes to limit the risk of localised flooding. Any weather related emergencies should be reported to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline,” the City said in a statement.
